A key suspect in the high-profile disappearance of the young British girl has been released from a German prison, where he was completing a sentence for an unrelated offence.
The German national was transported out of jail by his lawyer. He wasn't visible in the car, but police stated his exit from the detention center.
He had been convicted of sexually assaulting an elderly woman in the Portuguese resort in 2005 and will be fitted with an electronic monitor following his release.
The German national, in his late 40s, has never been charged with offenses linked to the disappearance. He denies any involvement.
Case Details of the Incident
The young girl vanished in the holiday destination of a coastal town in 2007. The children had been left sleeping in a rental unit while her mother and father, Kate and Gerry, were dining at a nearby restaurant.
Madeleine's disappearance has grown into one of the most widely known unsolved missing person cases globally.
Probe and Evidence
Investigators in Germany have pointed to evidence—including mobile phone records—indicating Brückner may have been in the area when she went missing, and have repeatedly maintained that they believe he is the perpetrator.
However, they have lacked sufficient evidence to bring charges.
Brückner, who resided for long periods in the southern Portugal, was a transient, a minor offender, and a registered sex criminal. He has several previous convictions, among them molesting minors in the mid-90s and recent years.
Latest Searches
Authorities from both police carried out a new search between where the McCanns had been staying and addresses linked to Brückner in recent months, but this yielded no breakthroughs.
In 2023, investigators carried out searches near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz.
The man spent time in the Praia da Luz area between the early 2000s to the late 2010s and had images and recordings of himself near the reservoir.
Legal Challenges
In October last year, Brückner was cleared of separate sex crimes by a German court, which were said to have occurred in the country between over a span of years.
Due to variations between judicial frameworks, prosecutors in Germany suspect him of homicide in relation to the case, while British police continue to treat her case as a missing persons matter.
