Sir Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not pursuing a return to football management, explaining that it would be difficult to recreate the special mission he felt as England’s manager.

Southgate expressed his intention to channel his attention toward working with the next generation and combating what he labeled a widespread pessimistic outlook currently existing in the country.

Exploring New Avenues Beyond The Sport

Speaking on air, he was questioned on rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the Premier League and other leagues.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Commitment to Mentorship

Leading up to the release of his new title, his new work on leadership, the author shared that he is deeply committed about providing role models for young people, applying lessons from his tenure as head coach of the national side between 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

The leader feels that his experience coaching England, during which the team transformed from being widely disliked to widely supported, holds wider relevance.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Family Life and Guiding Young People

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he commented: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Unity Over Division

The former manager insisted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often emphasizes conflict.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he commented. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

The manager’s new release, the book Dear England, is scheduled to provide deeper reflections on management and public spirit inspired by his distinguished career.
