Similar to bad weather tore through the northwest the night before, City blew United away at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 win for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they reinforced their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Defeats for Manchester United

This scoreline represented back-to-back WSL losses for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the top team with their title hopes severely dented.

Manchester United's ability to juggle domestic and continental football with a thin squad has been a hotly discussed topic since they qualified for the UCL. Reviewing the schedule, it always appeared this was the matchday that would fully examine this capability. Unfortunately for the away side, they appeared tired from start to finish, the memorable win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had sought to make changes with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all provided vigor, although the omission of the in-form Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in contrast, have no similar loading concerns. The City coach made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from a fitness issue.

Overpowering Start

The pressure started to accumulate for the United boss and his side from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the strength from Manchester City whose potent attack manipulated and pulled the visitors apart with a superb first half performance that saw them score three goals in 21 minutes.

This placed City firmly in control and had Manchester United disorganized. Before this encounter, United had allowed just six in this league campaign but they collapsed in the face of the hosts' creative prowess.

Opening Threats

The early indicators came soon when Miedema used her power to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot wide. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything in the beginning, using the space left by Riviere down the visitors' right flank. Her passes were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had a number of sorties ahead, their direct style giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not trouble Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, on the other hand, commanded the ball, probing their opposition and trying to draw them out of their structure.

Scoring Spree

They turned chances into goals with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A cross to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's 7th goal from a cross of the term.

They increased their cushion with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Rose was permitted to drive through the middle from defense, the pitch opened up for City. Shortly later, they had a third after a rapid shift in possession saw Lauren Hemp given the opportunity to fire a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The clearest adjustment came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the match. Former Manchester City player Park came closest, striking the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to register a one shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their cushion when a superb Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. Previously unable to beat any side who ended above them last season, City's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a favorable position after nine matches.
